• Fine/True Lavender essential oil helps reduce muscle, digestive, and respiratory spasms. It limits involuntary contractions of smooth muscles through the action of linalool, which inhibits the release of acetylcholine. 🌿 The Lavandula Family

• The best-known variety is Fine Lavender, also called True Lavender or Officinal Lavender, with the Latin name Lavandula angustifolia Mill. It grows wild in southeastern France, between 600 and 1700 meters in altitude, but is most often cultivated. It has a single flowering top, and its flowers are bluish-grey in loose spikes. It forms clumps 20 to 60 cm in diameter and about 50 cm high. This lavender is considered a "population" or "clonal" variety. A population lavender is produced by sowing seeds, as is the case with Fine Lavender from Haute Provence, while a clonal lavender is produced by cuttings, such as True Lavender from Bulgaria.

• Fine lavender is used particularly for scars, dry skin, nervousness, restlessness, and bedsores.
• True Lavender is used particularly in the cases of restlessness, agitation, itching, skin irritation, pain and migraines, for children under 6 years old.

🌱 Spike Lavender

• Spike lavender, *Lavandula latifolia* Medik., grows at altitudes between 200 and 700 meters. It forms clumps 50 to 70 cm tall and 60 cm in diameter. Its flowers are darker than those of true lavender, and each flower has two bracts. The flower spikes are slender and multi-tiered. Its scent is strong and camphoraceous, due to its composition.

• Spike lavender is used particularly in the cases of burns (even severe ones!), sunburn, stings from venomous animals, bites from venomous animals, eczema (dry or weeping).

🔀 Lavandin

• Lavandin, *Lavandula x intermedia* Emeric ex Loisel, is a hybrid between True Lavender and Spike Lavender. It can only be propagated by cuttings as it is sterile. It grows at altitudes between 500 and 700 meters. It has a flowering top with very large spikes, two large bracts, and can reach up to 1 meter in height. It is more resistant to disease and climate than other lavenders, offers a better yield, but its scent is less pleasant, more camphoraceous than True Lavender.

• Lavandin Super is used particularly for the prevention or elimination of lice and cramps.

🇫🇷 French Lavender (Lavandula stoechas)

• The least known lavender is French lavender (Lavandula stoechas), also called French lavender or French lavender, Lavandula stoechas L. It is one of the wild lavenders found in France. It is distinguished from other lavenders by the shape of its compact flower spikes and the presence of large bracts at the tips of the spikes, hence its name French lavender. It generally grows to a height of 30 to 60 cm. Its essential oil has a more heady scent, due to a composition rich in fenchone and camphor.

• Lavandula stoechas is used particularly in the cases of serous otitis in adults and children over 6 years old.

⚖️ Fine or True?

• Botanically speaking, there is no difference between Fine Lavender and True Lavender, as we saw earlier. They both have the Latin name Lavandula angustifolia Mill., or Lavandula officinalis Chaix. The differences between the two are primarily at the genetic level.

• Fine lavender, and more specifically fine lavender from Haute-Provence, is protected by a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). Its production must therefore adhere to strict specifications to qualify for this designation. It is notably classified as a population lavender: it is propagated only by seed, so each lavender plant is unique, possessing its own genetic makeup.

• Fields of flowering lavender display a beautiful range of blue-violet hues. It must also come from locally sourced plants and be cultivated at a minimum altitude of 800 meters within a defined geographical area in France. Its essential oil must also meet certain criteria, such as a precise biochemical composition, a distinctive scent, and, of course, a defined production method.

• True lavender, on the other hand, is primarily produced in Bulgaria, the world's leading producer for several years. It is classified as clonal lavender: its production is achieved through propagation by cuttings. Each lavender plant is therefore identical, a clone

• During flowering, fields of cloned lavender have a uniform color. The most commonly cultivated varieties of true lavender are Maillette, Matherone, C15-5, 77-13, and DIVA. Its fragrance is just as pleasant, but that of fine lavender is often preferred.

Harvest The Lavender At Sunrise

🌿 A well-maintained lavender field can thrive for decades! Lavender bushes reach their peak in their fourth year. The best time to harvest lavender is during its flowering season: mid-summer, between late June and August.

🌅 The best time to harvest them is early in the morning when the weather is fine and dry. This allows you to pick the most open and fragrant flowers. Just after the dew has evaporated, and before the sun gets too high, the flowers retain all their scent.

✂️ The best tool is pruning shears, as they allow you to cut the stems straight across, optimizing lavender regrowth. This Mediterranean plant thrives in full sun on rocky soil, but it also adapts to any good garden soil. It should be pruned every autumn after flowering to maintain its compact shape.

❄️ After picking, it is possible to store fresh lavender in damp paper in the refrigerator for a few days, or dry it by keeping a stem of about thirty centimeters and letting it dry in the open air, flat, in a dry and well-ventilated environment.
